Advent is a time of hope, promise and anticipation, of the light of God growing nearer and nearer to us. To emphasize this sense of anticipation, their are four candles, one for each Sunday in Advent. The candles grow progressively larger and brighter, creating a sense of movement and change.

The candles rest on the branch of a tree to represent the Jesse tree or a Christmas tree. The evergreen branches also represent the unchanging love of God for us. The background is deep purple, the traditional color of Advent.
