Holy Trinity Parish History

Holy Trinity was built in 1899 as a mission church of St. Paul 's, Pendleton, shortly after the founding of Clemson College . Holy Trinity became a parish in 1919, reverted to its mission status in 1940, and resumed its status as a parish in 1959.

In the 1960s, Clemson College more than doubled its enrollment when it dropped compulsory ROTC, became coeducational, and attained university status. As a result, both the city of Clemson and Holy Trinity experienced rapid growth. The original church, reoriented and given a brick veneer in the 1920s, soon became too small for the needs of a growing congregation, and over the years its structure became increasingly unsound. In 1996, the building was deconsecrated and dismantled after the completion of the new church and office complex. The new education building, completed in 1997, was built on the site that included the old church, parish hall, and Day School.

The Parish of St. Paul's, Pendleton, dates from 1819 and the church building from 1822. It is the oldest Episcopal church in the area and second oldest in what is now the Diocese of Upper South Carolina. The care and stewardship of St. Paul 's, now a dormant church, and its historic churchyard were assigned to Holy Trinity in 1964. St. Paul 's parish house, constructed after World War II, is now used as a Thrift Shop operated by volunteers from Holy Trinity and other community members as a means of reaching out to the community.
